My October Favorites

Happy Halloween!

I hope you are all having a spooky and fun weekend. I think most of my night will consist of watching scary movies with my friends, but that sounds just fine to me. I have a few of my October favorites, and I know you’ll probably notice there aren’t many. I have used a lot of what I used last month, but there are some items I’ve been liking a LOT and been using more than others. The Moroccan oil is from years ago, and I still have it. I think I have a very old blog post from when I first got it! Anyway, it still is my favorite thing all these years later.

1. Covergirl blush in “Rose Silk”

This stuff is crazy! It looks like a brighter rose color, but it comes off quite light and fresh on your face. I’m obsessed with the color. I think since it isn’t extremely pigmented, it goes on lightly at first, but you can definitely make it more dramatic if you layer it gradually.

2. Nuance by Salma Hayek tinted moisturizer

My skin has been very very bad lately. I’ve been breaking out around my chin and mouth and I have no idea why! I use a tiny bit of this and buff it into the skin to moisturize and even out trouble areas.

3. Moroccan Oil Treatment

I’ve been using this a lot more lately. The texture is very thick, so I always recommend using very little and seeing what your hair can handle as far as greasiness. It makes every part of my hair sleeker and smoother. You can buy this size at most salons, and I think they sell it at Sephora and Ulta.

Autumn Apple Cake

Hello everyone!

I made a fun apple cake yesterday and it ended up being a hit! It really isn’t that hard, and this was my first cake recipe from scratch.

This is a chunkier apple cake, and the size of the chunks reminds me a lot of apple pie. But the consistency of the cake is amazing with the apple, and it’s thicker like a coffee cake.

It seems like you’ll need a lot for this recipe, but honestly I had all the ingredients but the apples and custard right in the kitchen. I hope you enjoy this little fall treat!

3 c flour

2 t baking powder

1/8 t salt

1/4 t cloves (ground)

1/4 t nutmeg (ground)

6 oz butter (can be cold)

3/4 c sugar

2 large Granny Smith apples and 2 large Golden Delicious apples (or just 4 Granny Smith if you’d like)

2 eggs

2/4 c milk

2 T sugar (for top of cake)

1 pack of vanilla jello pudding (for an easy custard)

1. Grease and flour a taller pan to give it a thick up-and-down shape

2. Preheat oven to 375 degrees

3. Mix the flour, salt, baking powder, nutmeg, and cloves together in a big mixing bowl

4. Cut your butter into pieces and mix it with your fingers. That’s right, just keep mushing the butter into the flour mixture until it’s the same consistency and a bit crumbly. (Obviously wash your hands before this)

5. Add the sugar to the flour mixture

6. Peel and cut your apples. We took the cores out of the apples, split them into 4 pieces, and cut each of those 3 or 4 times. Some pieces were chunky, but it works well for the cake.

7. Add the apples to the flour mixture and mix thoroughly

8. In a small bowl, mix milk and eggs together, and then add to the apple mixture and mix until you get a very dough-y batter.

9. Empty the dough into the ready pan and try to smooth out every part with a spatula or spoon.

10. Pour the sugar on top and all over the surface of the batter before putting it into the oven

11. Let it cook for 40-50 minutes (with a smaller pan, mine was completely ready at 40 minutes) and check when it comes out by sticking a toothpick in the middle

12. For the custard sauce, you could make your own from scratch, but I was hesitant to do that this time. I bought a vanilla jello pudding pack and added the milk over the stove until it came to a low boil. While it was still thin, I poured it on top of the slices, and it worked beautifully with the cake!

I was pretty proud of this cake to be honest with you! It’s perfect for a cold autumn night with your friends or family (as you can see, Rex liked the cake too).

Try this out and tell me what you think!

Ipsy Bag October 2014

ipsy october

oct nails

oct face

Hello there!

I received my Ipsy bag this week and I think this might be the most impressive bag yet. As you can see, it included good size objects and brands!

I already used the lipstick (I’m wearing it right now) and can I just say that even though this is the smallest sample, this is the perfect size for lipsticks. I never finish mine! The size of the mascara, body butter, and exfoliant are all much bigger sizes, and the OPI nail polish is shockingly full sized.

I also have used the exfoliant and body butter, and both are very nice. The exfoliant is more gritty and doesn’t have those small beads in it but rather have a sandy-texture to it. I kind of like it and I used it before putting on my makeup and thought my face felt clean and smooth! I also have terribly dry elbows from this weather, and the body butter completely hydrated them. The brands that came in the bag aren’t very familiar to me besides OPI and Patagonia, but those two are great companies. As for the mascara, I think the wand is a great size and I can’t wait to try it out. It’s been awhile since I saw a wand that was a brush, but I kind of prefer them to the plastic wands. The color for the OPI nail polish is called “On a Gilt Trip” and I thoroughly plan on using it this week! Altogether I think the colors were perfectly fall themed for this month. There were dark tones and shimmery gold tones, and that’s what I think about when I think of October!

What did you get in your Ipsy bag?

Rose Gold Autumn Manicure

Hey everyone!

I did a quick little French manicure that I thought I’d share since it was so quick and easy.  All you’ll need for this is a good base color and a metallic-ish rose gold color.

For my base coat, I used Essie’s “Ballet Slippers”.  Everyone totally loves this color and I see why! I used only one coat because I didn’t want my nails too pink. I think it worked out well!

After letting them dry, I used Sephora’s Formula X for the French tip in the color “Heroic”. I actually did 2 coats of this so it wouldn’t chip.

I waiting for them to dry completely before using a top coat. I always use the topcoat too early and mess up my tips, so I tried to wait it out this time. I used a cheap topcoat from Walmart and I really am considering just buying a good topcoat. It makes a huge difference and my nails have been chipping very easily. Just goes to show you that with some beauty products you really get what you pay for.

I really liked this manicure because the French tips are so classic, but I almost never do them anymore. It seems like a white French tip isn’t really on trend lately. I like how the color is muted and not too bright and in your face. As soon as I picked out the Formula X color I knew it would look great on the nails! When it dries, it seems to get more rosy.

As for this coming week, I hope everyone is having a great October! Halloween is coming and I definitely feel in spirit because I have little pumpkin lights hanging around my dorm. I hope this autumnal nail idea will inspire you for the rest of the month. Have a great week!

Huge Lush Haul

lush haulpumpkin lushlush wizardlush bomb

Hello everyone!

I may have gone into Lush and spent (a lot) of money. But in my defense, I haven’t gotten a large amount of Lush ever! I have never spent more than $30 at Lush because I try to get it once a month, and I never spend too much. Anyway, this time, I did. All the Halloween and Fall items were out and I was so incredibly excited. My Lush store is at West Farms Mall, and it’s always super well stocked. I really wanted the Christmas items, but they told me they wouldn’t be in for another couple weeks. I decided to splurge on all the fun little items. I also want to say I realize that the bath melt is not a new or “fall” item, but it reminds me of Halloween since it’s supposed to be a cauldron (plus I needed a new bath melt). Every item here was a new one to me besides the bath melt and Lord of Misrule bath bomb. Let’s get into the specifics!

1. Ceridwen’s Cauldron: $8.45

Like I said, a repeat, but got me excited for Halloween and it has had the best results on my skin!

2. Lord of Misrule $6.95

Yeah I actually bought two of these. It was the first time I ever got a double of a Lush item in one purchase, but this is quite literally my favorite bath bomb ever. It sometimes is between this and one of the Christmas bath bombs, but after using this last night I decided it is my favorite bath bomb ever.

3. Northern Lights $5.95

This was the one item I actually knew I was purchasing before I got into the store. I’ve sort of been stalking this new bath bomb because I see so many people using it and it looks absolutely beautiful.

4.  Sparkler $6.95

I wasn’t sure about this little guy but I saw a lot of people buying this one so I tossed it in as well.

5. Fairy Ring Soap $12 (About)

This was my “should I?” of all of them. It was the cutest thing of soap because instead of the usual ring of soap that Lush usually makes, it had a little fairy mushroom house, so I had to give it a try.

6. Sparkly Pumpkin $7.95

It’s probably the most glitzy of the bunch, and I’m so excited since this smells just like fall!

7. Wizard $7.95

I love this little guy so much! I feel like it smells like the Karma scent, but I could be wrong. It is a familiar smell so I think it’s one of their popular ones. It also reminds me of the penguin bubble bar from the Christmas stuff. He seems like the same shape! I loved him so much and I had a hard time picking one out to buy since they all looked so cute. A lot of people are like “This doesn’t look like a wizard!” but I think he sort of does. He has little sparkles in his eyes and a small star on his head. My mom saw him and told me not to use him because he was too cute. I think they’re Halloween stuff this year is a lot more creative and I hope they bring this guy back, as I love the purple color and how it matches the Northern Lights and Sparkler bath bombs. I also enjoy how some of them are scents from other familiar Lush items and not all new ones that will eventually go away.

Have you seen the new fall Lush items?

Topshop Magic Liner Review + Autumn Eye Look

Hello there!

I ordered a new eyeliner the other day. Yes that’s right, instead of going to CVS or Sephora or Ulta, I ordered one online. I never usually do this because there’s never a need for it! However, this particular eye liner was on my must-have list, and I didn’t have a choice.

I saw this Topshop eye liner in several magazines throughout the fall. It was named one of the easiest and fast-drying felt tips. I imagine the reason it’s easy for other people to use is because it’s popular in the UK where there are actual Topshop stores. But I have to settle for the ones inside Nordstrom instead! I called the store and asked if they carried any of the Topshop beauty products and they said they didn’t. But when I went on Nordstrom’s website, under their Topshop area, they sold beauty items! And there was the magic liner I wanted.

Long story short, this is the first time I’ve had eye liner shipped to me. I wanted to try it out and I don’t regret it! It was about $12 with no shipping, and it got to me pretty quickly (probably because I ordered through the Nordstrom website). The reason I wanted to try this is because most of the felt tips that are sold at Sephora or Ulta are just too expensive, or they’re store brand and aren’t that good. I just wanted something that could quickly give me a cat-eye for fall, since that is the most appropriate time to wear it (in my opinion). Any at CVS just weren’t the best quality. Once I opened up the Topshop one, I immediate tried it out and it was a little different than I expected, but I grew to love it. When first using it, it sort of feels a little dry. Not actually dry, just not as wet and watery as the L’oreal one that I usually use. It takes a bit more effort than just touching it to your eyelid, you really have to draw it on. Luckily, it’s all in one pen, so it’s really easy to just make the wing shape that you want. I found it so much easier than the ones that you dip into the liner. I sort of felt like Alexa Chung easily drawing on my wings. Since I’ve just been using it recently, it’s hard to tell how long this will last. I’m guessing it’s good quality since it was featured in so many magazines. I have a good feeling about this liquid liner!

The only thing I wish was that it is easier to get to me. Since Topshop offers free shipping, I could just reorder this whenever I want and it’s ultimately the same. But at the same time, I really enjoy going into a store and physically buying makeup.

In all, I feel like I’ll be using this all fall and winter. It made me feel so cozy for the makeup looks I could do. This one in particular was using my Naked Palette as well as a few of my single eyeshadows that I got from my Ipsy bag. I used a lot of bronze and gold tones because I wanted it to be very autumnal! I also used the gold shadow from the first Naked palette under my eyes close to my inner corners. The wing plus the fall shades helped me get in the mood for October!

What do you think of Topshop beauty?

Oh, The Places You’ll Go Tag

I saw this from Plus Beauty and thought it would be a fun tag to do as my first tag! I hope you enjoy it.

1. If you could hop on a plane to anywhere, right now, where you would you go?

I would want to go somewhere I hadn’t already gone, so I’ll go with somewhere in Scandinavia. I have always wanted to visit there. I’m fascinated by their culture and design style!

2. Do you have a scent that takes you back to a memorable vacation?

I have my old Abercrombie & Fitch perfume that I wore all throughout middle school, so it reminds me of going on vacation in Rhode Island with my family.

3. If you had the choice, would you rather drive, fly, or take a train?

Probably drive. Flying and any public transportation scares me a little bit!

4. Have you lived in the same city all your life, or have you moved frequently throughout growing up?

I was born near Boston in a town called Chelmsford and stayed there until I was 4 years old. We then moved to a small town called Southwick which was near where my mom grew up, and I lived there all my life. And now, funnily enough, I’m back in the Boston area going to school.

5. Have you ever been in a long-distance relationship?

Well I actually sort of am right now…hopefully not for much longer! Haha. When me and my boyfriend first started dating we lived close to each other. Now we’re trying to get him living out here in Boston.

6. What’s the craziest thing you’ve done whilst on vacation?

When I was younger we went to Yosemite with a lot of my family and climbed up the side of a cliff. I was young but everyone tells me it was a very dangerous hike! I remember there also being mudslides and bears roaming around.

7. Do you get jet-lagged after a long flight?

I don’t think I do immediately after. I was only very badly jet lagged from a trip to London where I didn’t sleep the whole flight, and then had to stay up a whole other day when we first landed in England.

8. Dream vacation?

I’m a huge Essiebutton fan and she went on a road trip through Scandinavia, which is the most fun thing ever. I would love doing something like that in the future!

9. Worst vacation?

I can think of a few difficult times I’ve had while on vacation. But I don’t think that makes it the “worst vacation”, I think you can make the most of any time off.

10. Would you ever go on vacation to somewhere you’ve already been?

Absolutely! Every place I’ve been to undoubtably has so many more things to see. There’s so much more to discover!

If anyone wants to do this tag, feel free to! I’m not tagging anyone either, I’m just gonna consider you tagged if you read this and felt like doing it. Have a great day!

September Faves! Beauty, Fashion, & Random!

Hello everyone!

I decided every once in a while when I’ve been really enjoying some items throughout a month, I’ll blog about them at the end of the month. October is here and I used a lot of items over and over throughout September, and thought it’d be nice to share! For my first favorites post, I thought I would add a little bit of everything, so I included some beauty items, some fashion items, and then some everyday lifestyle items. I hope you enjoy!

1. Makeover Essentials Palette

My favorite shades in this palette are the first three because those are the eye shadows, and the rest are actually lip colors. If you like the Naked basics palettes, you’ll enjoy this.

2. Benefit “They’re Real” Mascara

I’ve been using this forever and I just really enjoy the length of the wand and the type of brush. I think it works really well! To me, it’s amazing, but there are good and bad reviews on this mascara. It won’t give you huge fake looking lashes, but it does extend them and give you a beautiful fluttery look. When using too much, it tends to stick lashes together a little and that can be hard to remove. This is what keeps me from saying it gives a “false lashes” look, because it won’t give every individual lash an extension, it tends to group them together.

3. Nyx Single Eye Shadow

This is a shimmery eyeshadow. I tend to use it with a nice thick liquid liner.

4. Green Skirt from Target

I wear this a lot with a loose silk-type shirt. It reminds me of old movies with a simple high waisted skit that gives me a vintage feel. I believe this was around $15 or $20, which is pretty expensive for Target! I also have noticed this forest green color everywhere for fall, so I can’t wait to keep paring it with other Autumn neutrals.

5. Asos Boots

I won’t say too much since I have a whole post on them here. I honestly think this is a shoe everybody would enjoy wearing. In my opinion, they were a great buy!

6. “It” by Alexa Chung

Here’s the description of the book: “A wholly unique collection of Chung’s personal writings, drawings, and photographs, It covers everything from her candid thoughts on life, love, and music to her favorite ensembles and how to decide what to wear in the morning. With Chung’s characteristic wit, charm, and refreshingly down-to-earth attitude, this full-color compendium is a must-have for anyone who loves fashion, music, and just about everything Alexa Chung”. I wasn’t entirely sure what the book would be about, and I was very pleased with everything about it.

7. Diptyque Figuier Candle

This company is sometimes known and sometimes not. This candle smells so fresh and natural. The scent can really just be described as amazing! Specifically the scent is “Fig Tree” which is so different and interesting. The price was about $60 which I know is expensive, but I quite literally felt the need to buy it right at that second. They certainly aren’t cheap, but so many bloggers and professionals have said the splurge is worth it. I would definitely recommend more candles from this brand, especially this specific one. I think they are made similarly to Jo Malone candles, so the quality is very apparent. I also love the jar and packaging because it’s so beautiful and sophisticated. The wax lasts a long time, as I bought this in the spring and it has so much left to burn.

8. Bear Naked Granola

The flavor of this kind was vanilla. There are so many ingredients like flax seeds and almonds. Those types of seeds with the oats and vanilla flavor are so delicious in my yogurt! I bought this at Walmart and there were many other flavors, but I imagine you can buy them at other grocery stores or even Target. Every time I use this granola, I feel like my yogurt and oatmeal are Instagram worthy, they make all my meals look so healthy and delicious. The packaging is fun and still kind of health-concious, so it made me feel responsible buying myself some granola. There are also a variety of flavors to pick from that my boyfriend loves, so I’m guessing there’s a flavor for everyone!

Super Fast Glitter Manicure

nails glitter

Hello there!

I did a glitter manicure over the weekend that I think is perfect for fall. In my opinion, glitter is always appropriate, but during the fall and winter it seems so much more magical.

I’ve had this glitter polish from Claire’s for so long, and I always love using it. I slightly ombred every nail but my ring finger, which I kept all glitter. The reason I liked this was it is almost a twist on a French manicure.

I have gotten soo many compliments on these, and the crazy thing is they were so easy to do! I simply layered one line of glitter first concentrated on the very tip of the nail. Once that dried, I kept layering the glitter down further and further until it started to resemble an ombre. It doesn’t need to be perfect, so there’s room for not-enough-sparkle or too-much-sparkle. Also, it’s easier to do this with a more chunky or fat glitter. This had an assortment of different glitter sizes, but there are some glitter polishes that are just way too thin, and it’s harder to ombre that kind. Since this is a cheap polish, it is extremely difficult to remove. I wanted a disclaimer in there because this polish stays on forever which is good, until you’re scraping it off and wishing you did a base coat. So try to layer a clear polish first, since it may come off easier. This worked well on my still kind-of short nails, and it also looks great on long nails! Try it out and tell me how it works. Since there’s so many colors in this glitter, it goes with everything! And it looks great while holding a smoothie or a pumpkin spice latte. I did a topcoat at the end to give a bit of shine. Hopefully this quick mani goes well for you!
